Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January
19 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee and was raised in Sevierville, Tennessee
to Avie Lee Parton who was a housewife and Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco farmer.
At 12, she was being telecast on Knoxville TV and at 13 she had already begun
recording for an independent label and performing at the Grand Ole Opry. After
having graduated from the high school in 1964, she relocated to Nashville to
start her country-singing career. She was in love with Carl Dean, who ran an asphalt-paving
business; they got married on May 30 1966 and have remained together. Porter
Wagoner saw her singing and hired her to appear on The Porter Wagoner Show
(1961). She stayed with the show for 7 years, their duets went viral and she
performed with his group at the Grand Ole Opry; she also sold and toured
records. Her smash hit "Joshua" that reached the top spot in 1970 was
her biggest hit single. She decided to go it alone, even though she still
recorded duets with the singer. In 1974, she walked away from him to be a solo
artist. Dolly became a hugely admired artist and singer. Dolly was awarded many
Country Music Association awards (1968, 1970, 1971, 1975, and 1976). The
diminutive (5'0") beauty was an ideal candidate for TV at the time, and by
the middle of the 1970s she was appearing frequently on TV specials and talk
shows , before launching her own show, Dolly (1976). Dolly got her first Grammy
award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 1977 for "Here You Come
Again". Dolly's film debut came in 9 to 5 (1980) in which she was awarded
an Oscar nomination for her composition of the title track, as well as Grammy
Awards 2 and 3: Best Country Song, and Best Female Country Vocal Performance
for the song "Nine to Five." Her fame grew due to her appearances in
The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), as along with Rhinestone (1984),
with the song "Tennessee Homesick Blues". Dolly Parton Enterprises,
worth $100 million, is her biggest. Dollywood was established in Pigeon Forge
in Tennessee in 1986 to commemorate her Smoky Mountain roots. She was in the
Dolly (1987 television series) as herself. In the episode "Trio", she
was awarded the Best Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy in
1988.
